President’s Corner

As President of North Bay Trout Unlimited I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on your chapter’s activities for the past year.  We have reached over 1400 future conservationists in Marin County and San Francisco with our First Cast and Trout in the Classroom programs. Trout in the Classroom services over 60 schools and next year will reach 75 classrooms. First Cast events have introduced over 120 youth and their parent/guardians to the sport of fishing through educational events.

Your nine member board of directors has worked to obtain grants from a number of agencies to support this work and to continue our restoration work. The Board of Directors meet the first Thursday of the month and you are welcome to attend. This group has worked diligently for the past 2 1/2  years to bring NBTU into National prominence.

In addition, our volunteer list has grown to over 150 members. Our volunteers have spent many hours working on projects in the Lagunitas watershed with the State Parks and with homeowners, as well as with the National Park Service at Redwood Creek in an ongoing effort to restore salmon and steelhead runs. If you would like to join us, please go here and click “yes” to join the volunteers.

In closing, I would like to invite you to come and enjoy our informative general meetings, the location of which can be found on this website.

I remind you that your yearly dues not only support our local work but fund a number of projects across the country. I hope that you will visit this website often as well as the State TU site at www.tucalifornia.org and the National site at www.tu.org.

Friday, Feb. 26th, Wade Thomas School teachers, Claudia Holko and Tina Clinton, became the first of the 49 classrooms to release the trout that they raised from eggs in their classrooms into the MMWD watershed. Classes will be releasing their fish over the next two weeks. The 2010 Trout in the Classroom programs kicked off when trout eggs were delivered on January 26th to the classrooms from the Napa hatchery.  Chuck Schultz coordinated over 20 NBTU volunteers to make deliveries to the 48 classrooms located in Marin County and San Francisco.  Each classroom received approximately 35 eggs which began hatching on February 9th.  The volunteers and teachers had set up the aquariums with water temperatures between 52 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit the week prior to receiving the eggs.
It was an exciting day for the students and the teachers when the eggs were delivered and carefully dispensed, by each student, into the aquariums.  The eggs were already eyed out so the students saw the eggs in a life stage and even more exciting as they hatched into fish attached to an egg sac.  The students will care for their fish and the tank before releasing them into a stream below Lagunitas Creek, in four to six weeks, while teachers and volunteers, who have received training by the DFG in coordination with NBTU, will prepare lessons on proper habitat and conservation techniques necessary for fish to survive.

History
In 1969, the officers of California TU disbanded and formed California Trout after some disagreement over the Dos Rios Dam.  TU members in California were left with no chapters or organization.  In 1972, Chuck Voss, the Executive Director of TU (based in Denver) came to Marin County and established the North Bay Chapter.  NBTU was the first and only chapter in California for the next few years.  The next year, Mr. Voss returned to form the Trout Unlimited Council of California.
