| Trout in the Classroom |
2010 is going to be a big year for our already successful TIC (Trout In the Classroom) program which will show an increase of 20 to 25 new classrooms in the program for a total of 60 classrooms. TIC is designed to teach young people to have an appreciation of conservation and the need to protect the environment. The program is targeted to grades K-12 with the majority in the elementary grades. NBTU provides each classroom with coldwater aquariums, thanks to a generous grant from the Marin Community Foundation.
The CA. Dept. of Fish & Game provides trout eggs, and NBTU assists in the raising of them for their release as fingerlings. The teachers develop a curriculum that teaches about the life cycle of the fish, the environment they will need to survive, and the food that they eat.
Students learn a great deal about trout and salmon, their habitat, their predators, and the need for clean, cold watersheds.
Introducing youngsters to the out of doors and fisheries is an important step in developing future caretakers of the environment.
