Salmon in Lagunitas Creek ……………….. Last week, MMWD released water from Kent Dam, increasing flows from 20 to 35 cfs which allowed Coho salmon to move into the main stem of Lagunitas Creek. Some 20 new redds and 84 live Coho have been spotted upstream of Devil’s Gulch. Since the season began, 55 redds and between 150 and 210 Coho have been spotted.
Normally, the season for Coho runs from early November to early January as the fish cannot store enough fat to make the run after mid-January. Due to low water, the fish are unable to make their way into Devil’s Gulch or San Geronimo Creeks, as their flows remain low. These tributaries provide better spawning habitat than Lagunita creek due to the heavy runoff in normal winters in the mainstem. The young fish are unable to cope with the high flows and are swept away.
However, the numbers of fish, although historically low, are better than in recent years and gives credence to the belief that much of our problem is a lack of normal rainfall. For this reason, NBTU volunteers will continue to strive to provide the best habitat for the fish until that time when we return to normal winter weather patterns.

Spey-O-Rama......... The Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club (GGACC) is pleased to once again host the Jimmy Green International Spey-O-Rama: The World Championship of Spey Casting. November kicks off our $40 for 40 Years fundraising campaign. 2012 will be the 40th year of NBTU, the oldest chapter in CA! Your volunteers have raised over $200,000 in grants over the past three years for conservation and youth education.
